Statement of intent for music
At Grenoside Community Primary School, we value music as a form of communication and expression that can positively change and impact the way children feel, think and act. We believe that teaching music helps the body and the mind work together. Dancing to music helps children develop motor skills as well as self-expression. Singing together fosters a feeling of community and shared enjoyment.
Statement of implementation for music
Following National Curriculum objectives, using Cornerstones and music express resources ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. During the year, all children will have the opportunity to develop their understanding, skills and techniques in music. In some year groups, music is taught as part of a carousel of subjects to allow children access to the best quality music teaching available in school.
We are very proud of our singing ability at Grenoside and have weekly singing sessions. We welcome parents to regular productions where we share our singing and musical ability. Our peripatetic teachers who come into school to teach music lessons are giving opportunities for children to learn and develop their skills from an experienced specialist teacher. These teachers are; guitar, woodwind, drums and violins.
We also invest every year in whole class violin teaching for the Year 4 children. A specialist violin teacher teaches the violin from the beginning to all the Y4 children in groups of around 16.
Statement of impact for music
By the time children leave Grenoside Community Primary School, they will have:
- skills which they will be able to use to create original and imaginative musical compositions;
- a good awareness and appreciation of different musical traditions and genres;
- an understanding of how musical provenance - the historical, social and cultural origins of music - contributes to the diversity of musical styles;
- the ability to give written and verbal explanations, using musical terminology effectively, accurately and appropriately;
- a love of and interest in a diverse range of musical activities, particularly singing.
