Expectations of a Year 1 Pupil
This section of the booklet provides information for parents and carers about the end of year expectations for children in our school. These expectations have been identified as being the minimum requirements your child must meet in order to ensure continued progress throughout the following year.
All the objectives will be worked on throughout the year and will be the focus of direct teaching. Any extra support you can provide in helping your child to achieve these is greatly valued.
If you have any queries regarding the content of this booklet or want support in knowing how best to help your child, please talk to your child's teacher.
- Know the correct phoneme sounds (see next page) for the corresponding grapheme (letters or groups of letters) and be able to recall these quickly, including alternative phoneme sounds for the same grapheme (e.g. ear as in bear and fear).
- Apply knowledge of these phonemes in reading and read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words.
- Read words ending in ‘s’, ‘es’, ‘ing’, ‘ed’, ‘er’ and ‘est’.
- Read words of more than one syllable (e.g. lunchbox, pondweed).
- Read a range of exception (tricky) words that are not phonetically decoded.
- Read words with contractions, and understand that the apostrophe represents the omitted letter (don’t, wouldn’t).
- Read books aloud, accurately, that are consistent with their developing phonic knowledge and reread these books to build up their fluency and confidence in word reading.
- Participate in discussion about what is read to them, taking turns and listening to what others say
- Explain clearly their understanding of what is read to them
- Listen to and discuss a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction.
- Link what they read or hear to their own experiences.
- Become very familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics.
- Recognise and join in with predictable phrases in a book.
- Learn to appreciate rhymes and poems, and to recite some by heart.
- Discuss word meanings, linking new meanings to those already known.
- Check that a text makes sense to them as they read and self-correct inaccurate reading.
- Discuss the significance of the title and events.
- Make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done.
- Predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far.
- Compose a sentence orally before writing it.
- Sequence sentences to form short narratives.
- Re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense and self-correct if needed.
- Discuss what they have written with the teacher or other pupils.
- Read their writing aloud clearly enough to be heard by their peers and the teacher.
- Leave consistently sized spaces between words.
- Join words and clauses using "and".
- Begin to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Use a capital letter for names of people, places, the days of the week, and the personal pronoun ‘I’.
- Begin to understand what plurals (more than one), verbs (action or ‘being’ words) and adjectives (describing words) are.
Transcription (spelling and handwriting)
- Spell words containing each of the 40+ phoneme sounds taught, applying their phonic knowledge.
- Spell common exception (tricky) words.
- Spell the days of the week.
- Add the common prefix ‘un’ to a word and know how this changes the word.
- Add the common suffixes ‘ing’, ‘ed’, ‘er’, ‘est’ to words.
- Know when to add ‘s’ to a word to make a plural; and when to add ‘es’ (when words end in ch/sh/x/s/z).
- Sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortably and correctly.
- Correctly form capital and lower case letters, with ascenders and descenders distinguished.
- Form digits 0-9.
Number & Place Value
- Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number..
- Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals.
- Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.
- Count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s.
- Identify 1 more and 1 less than a number.
- Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least.
Addition & Subtraction
- Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs.
- Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20 (e.g. 4 + 5 = 9 so 14 + 5 = 19 and 4 + 15 = 19).
- Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0.
- Solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? - 9.
- Solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher.
- Recognise, find and name a half as 1 of 2 equal parts of an object, shape or quantity
- Recognise, find and name a quarter as 1 of 4 equal parts of an object, shape or quantity.
- Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes and describe some of their properties
- Describe position, directions and movements, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns.
- Compare, describe and solve practical problems for lengths and heights [e.g. long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half]; mass and weight; capacity and volume; and time.
- Measure and begin to record length and height; mass/weight; capacity and volume.
- Recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes.
- Tell the time to the hour (o’clock) and half past the hour.
- Write the time and draw hands on a clock face to show the time.
- Sequence events in chronological order using language.
- Recognise and use language relating to dates, including days, weeks, months and years.
