The Curriculum at Grenoside Primary School

The school aims to develop six key attributes in all pupils so that they are successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. The six attributes are:

The staff and pupils at Grenoside Community Primary school are proactive in reviewing and refreshing the curriculum to ensure that it continues to be relevant, inspiring and engaging. A love of lifelong learning and the learning attributes required to be a successful learner are important to the school.

The initial basis for the planning of topics is the Cornerstones curriculum. This provides a framework, underpinned by the National Curriculum. The long term plan also ensures that skills, concepts and knowledge are taught at a level that develops and challenges children. This topic approach provides opportunities to engage, develop, innovate and express.

The topics are planned carefully by staff and regularly reviewed taking into account pupil feedback. Topics incorporate the ethos of the school as well as including the wider environment that is unique to Grenoside Community Primary School. This includes making use of the school grounds and the local ancient woodland. We have developed good links with The Woodland Trust.

Our definition of progress is the widening and deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours. We adapt, organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.

The planning of the curriculum builds in opportunity for repetition and practice opportunities for essential knowledge, skills and understanding in every subject. This ensures children are able to revisit and build on previous learning. This allows them to develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within the subject.

There are times when the curriculum is changed to reflect national and international events such as the Olympics, solar eclipses and current issues as they arise.

We have implemented a curriculum that offers a range of experiences which contribute to every child receiving a full and rich curriculum. These support and champion our culture and ensures that our children benefit from a full range of academic, spiritual, moral, social and cultural activities. These activities enrich their lives and those of our whole school community and make them proud of their British values and diverse society to which they belong to and play an active part in.

Diversity is promoted and celebrated not only to reflect the experiences of some of the children but also to enable children to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences that are in the wider world. The school curriculum includes key events in the lives of the pupils who attend the school which includes Eid and other faiths and values in society. Recently, older pupils worked with the Buddhist center in Sheffield to develop mindfulness and wellbeing.

The Education reform act 1988 requires all schools to organize a daily act of collective worship, which is of a broadly Christian nature, and to include religious education in the curriculum. Our curriculum covers Christianity and other world religions. The aim is to develop knowledge of and tolerance and understanding of different faiths and no faiths. The act of collective worship varies during the week to include class, phase and whole school assemblies.

Fundamental British Values are also integrated into the curriculum and into everyday life at Grenoside Community Primary school. These include learning about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths. This is supported by the golden rules and the behavior expectations of all at Grenoside Community Primary school.

We are fortunate to have supportive parents who sometimes contribute to specific aspects of the curriculum including cultural aspects (Chinese New Year), health and safety (Fire safety) and healthy living (dentistry) are some examples.

Parents receive half termly curriculum summaries that indicate the areas being taught, both academic and personal development. We know that many parents support their child’s learning with family visits and learning at home. There is also plenty of information regarding ‘helping your child at school’ and we also run workshops from time to time, and in response to parental requests. Parents are also invited to school to see the children express their learning during the school year.

Subjects are taught in an integrated way however where this is not possible subjects are taught in discrete lessons. The teachers work closely together to reflect upon the effectiveness of the planning and delivery of the curriculum. It is important that all pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum and benefit from the expertise of the staff.

In order to maintain a relevant and challenging curriculum staff have regular training meetings. This may include INSET days or after-school meetings. Staff are also encouraged to visit other schools to compare standards and to share innovative ideas. Each member of staff has a subject which they are particularly interested in and champion. Some of the staff have specific qualifications in languages, music or sport. As a subject leader they aim to ensure the breadth and quality of the curriculum. The subject leaders regularly report to governors about the curriculum and the standards achieved in all subjects.

In the coming year, staff will be reflecting upon the quality of the questioning used by staff and children. Quality questioning develops a higher level of thinking and supports children to think critically. The six levels of questioning as identified in Bloom’s Taxonomy are:

  • Understanding
  • Applying
  • Analysing
  • Evaluating
  • Creating

Developing the child as an individual within a society is important. Children are expected to take responsibility for their own actions. Personal development is promoted across the curriculum and through the ethos of the school. The emotional wellbeing of pupils is carefully monitored as well as overtly taught. The provision for personal and social development is good and is reflected in the caring ethos of the school.

The curriculum is enhanced with visitors to school and specialised music teachers from the music service. Some children also take part in peripatetic music lessons. There are a variety of extracurricular clubs and activities which are changed throughout the year and regularly reviewed. Many of the children are already participating in extracurricular activities outside of school and this is celebrated in school and rewarded through the Sheffield Children’s University. We have at time taken part in research with the University and this has helped the children to develop academic knowledge and ambition.

As part of the curriculum the school has incorporated the work of Guy Claxton: ‘Building Learning Powers’. These focus upon four key dispositions and children readily discuss these aspects through their lessons and in assemblies. The dispositions are known in school as the 4 Rs: 

  • Reciprocity
  • Reflectiveness
  • Resourcefulness
  • Resilience.

These disciplines underpin the good learning attitudes that the children at the school have.

Alongside the skills, concepts and knowledge that the curriculum promotes we also aim to enjoy learning. A love of learning will enable children to continue to make their full potential and we also know that when we have fun, learning becomes memorable. On this website you will find more detail about each subject which reflects some of the opportunities and fun that the children have at Grenoside Community Primary School. There are examples of work and some of the comments from children. Each subject also has a tab called Information for Parents. This enables parents to view the expectations of the requirements in each subject. These are written as ‘I can’ statements which are shared with children.

We are proud that our curriculum gives our children the skills, confidence and self-belief to lead happy and fulfilled lives by encouraging them to aim high and work towards their goals and dreams in life.
